The alarm rang to wake me. I walked into the kitchen to get something to drink and there on the sofa Bill is up reading his kindle. Sarah got up and we hung around and chatted until it was time to leave for the airport.
The airport is busy even at 7:30 in the morning. I enjoy the energy of an airport. People coming and going happy to be leaving or coming home.
We arrive in plenty of time. However, our flight is delayed about an hour. We finally board, get our extra legroom seats and relax.....
Long flight. Dad slept, drank lots of water and had a snack. Jet Blue with its extra leg room is the best airline. I would pay more to fly Jet Blue because it is so comfortable.
I passed the time with some downloaded episodes of The Wire. We are getting ready to land by 1:45pm.
We arrive take the tram to the rental car area where Enterprise car rental place is located. We are first in line, and get a young slick talkin' guy to help process our rental. Not before trying to upgrade us with 3 different car classes from $50 more a day to $10 more a day. I look at him and tell him, how about a father and son road trip free upgrade. It would go a long way to building customer satisfaction. I figured he would either give us the upgrade or shut up and process the rental we had so we could get on the road. He did the latter.
The car is a brand new 4 door, dark grey Ford Focus plenty of car for a road trip. Now the fun part starts---- finding our way our of the airport onto our first road. This was not a problem as we found our way with a little help from the car guy where we picked up the car.
We took 380 north into 280 then followed sings to Ca 1. As i was driving, I could see the Golden Gate bridge in the foreground. I am happy to say our road led us over the bridge. What a beautiful, colorful bridge to cross. It has a walkway that next time, I will cross on foot.
Our drive forward was not without mishaps as we could not seem to get on the coastal road. It is not as easy as it sounds, just drive to the coastal road and up that road. We had to get there first as the roads surrounding it are cut into the mountainside and twist and turn while running somewhat parallel to the coastal road. Finally, after various directions from people that you wonder do they live here because they give you this blank stare
We did at last get tot he coastal road and we were rewarded with some beautiful vista of the coast. I was starting to fade as it was getting close to 5 pm Ca time. So I mentioned to Bill let's turn in for the night. We passed a small town and I did what we usually do on the trips, I asked Bill what he thoughts about stopping here. He said let's keep going a bit more and see if we can find something more interesting. I had some gas in my tank so I kept going. We got to Point Reyes and stopped at a motel but it was full. The gentlemen was kind enough to direct us to another place about 5 miles down the road called the Tomalas Bay Resort. We pushed onward.
Along the way, I stopped for a nice bottle of Pinot and some snacks at the local market. Now the resort is really just a cluster of motel rooms on the water. I walked in asked if they had a room with two beds and she showed me to a 2 room suite with a little sitting area. It look good, so I got Bill and we settled in to our room. The room was $155 a night, with Wi-Fi. That is important, how do you think I blog!
We open our bottle of Pinot sit walked down to the water's edge and share a moment of relaxation and calling home to pass the word we are safe and sound. I had not eaten expect for snacks on plane so the wine nicely hit me. I knew if I were to relax in the room, i would never get up again for dinner. So we got a recommendation to eat from the hotel and off we went.
It is a five minute drive to the saltwater restaurant. We both had the sauté halibut which was good. The place was crowded so we took a table outside. I was beginning to get a little chilly sitting outside and wished my sweater was not in the room. After a nice meal we headed back to the room to rest and sleep.....
